What does being ATOL protected cover?

ATOL protection will stop you from losing any money or becoming stranded if there are any issues or the travel company you booked with collapses. Sometimes, you can even be able to continue with your original plans. You can be confident that:

If the travel company collapses while you are on holiday, ATOL protection will ensure you finish your holiday and get home safely.

If the travel company collapses before you go on your holiday, you will receive a refund for the holiday.

By law your holiday must be protected when you’ve booked a package type holiday with a travel company. This includes:

Flights, cruise and accommodation

Car hire and flights

Accommodation, flights and car hire

Accommodation and flights

How do you check if your holiday is ATOL protected?

It is always a good idea to check the company you are booking with offers ATOL protection and if you are not sure then you should contact the travel company you booked with. You can ask for an ATOL license number or request a certificate. Alternatively, you can go onto CAA – Civil Aviation Authority and do an ATOL database search. Most companies will have an ATOL protection logo on their website, brochure or shop front.

Coronavirus and travel – what it means for you

(As of March 17th 2020) The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is advising against all but essential travel to certain places. Restricted destinations can be checked here > Foreign travel advice

If you have travel insurance, it is important for you to check with your insurer to find out how Coronavirus is going to affect your holiday and policy. If the country you have planned to visit does not have a travel ban then it is highly unlikely your travel insurance will cover you if you decide not to travel for reasons of your own. However, if the travel company you have booked with has cancelled your holiday because of Coronavirus, you should be able to claim a refund and rearrange. If you are unsure on what to do and want some advice on your holiday it is best to contact your travel company directly.

Despite travel being effected some people are instead taking advantage of the discounted rates and prices for travel at this time. With ATOL protection you are able to lock in the low prices and travel later. If your package holiday is later cancelled then you will be ATOL protected but if not then you would have secured yourself a fantastic deal!
